IFC Nitrogen Chemicals Resource Efficiency Benchmarking Initiative

International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has selected Integer Research as the Project Consultant on  its major new initiative benchmarking resource efficiency (REF) in the nitrogen industry in Europe and Central Asia. Through the initiative IFC aims to improve resource efficiency through stimulating and funding investment in REF technologies in the nitrogen industry.

The initiative benchmarks the resource efficiency of producers of nitrogen chemicals and fertilizers in Europe and Central Asia (ECA), specifically Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Turkey, the Balkans region and Central Asia.

It offers an opportunity for producers to understand how their operations compare on average to other regional producers, as well as to global and regional best practice, whilst also identifying areas for improvement and potential investments.

Global nitrogen industry accounts for around 1% of energy consumption. Participation in the initiative could help companies facilitate potential funding support from international and local resources for the uptake of REF technologies.

The initiative should be the most comprehensive benchmarking study on the nitrogen industry to date in terms of product coverage and benchmarking parametres, including energy, greenhouse gas emissions and pollution abatement, and labour and capital productivity.

Partnering with global environmental consultancy, Environ, Integer Research shall work with the industry community to determine a suitable and sustainable benchmarking methodology, and will undertake the benchmarking of ECA producers of nitrogen chemicals, including visiting individual participants.

IFC, Integer Research and Environ are talking to producers from the ECA region to undertake the benchmarking, and industry experts to help develop and validate the methodology and its results.
