Global crude steel production recovered to back its pre-recession level at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2009, but global output has now remained stagnant at this level for the past few months, with no growth in world production between September 2009 and January 2010.

The ferroalloy industry overall has managed to remain profitable during a recession-hit 2009, with the leading multinational mining firms that control much of the world’s manganese and chrome ore continuing to report healthy profits, according to a presentation given by Kevin Fowkes, the head of Integer’s steel and ferroalloy division, at last week’s Metal Bulletin international ferroalloy conference in Monte Carlo.
