On 15 December 2009, Oliver Hatfield presented a review of recent fertilizer market developments at the annual Fondsfinans Fertilizer Investor Conference in London.
We recently completed our review of the performance of 100 of the leading fertilizer producing companies around the world – the Financial Insight report. Not surprisingly, the research shows that the most recent period was one of the most volatile for decades in terms of revenues, earnings, and just about any other measure for any company exposed to market costs and prices in 2008 and 2009. The only companies able to escape the volatility were producers in countries where government offered shelter from the ups and downs – a significant part of the business – but in those cases governments and their subsidy budgets experienced the rollercoaster.
A surge in the demand for UAN has encouraged the leading producers to invest in new capacity. This inevitably raises questions about how the new supply can be absorbed. Oliver Hatfield, Director of Integer Research, examines the implications.

The paper was looking at the increase in demand for fertilizers due to biofuels. The slides are taken from Integer’s recently released publication “The Biofuels Boom and Fertilizers” report.
