Dr. Helmut Endres, an acknowledged expert in automotive engine development and strategy, is Navistar’s chief technical officer and vice president of Powertrain Engineering. Helmut joined Navistar in 2006 from Volkswagen AG in Germany, where he was most recently executive director of powertrain development for the Volkswagen brand.
At Navistar, he is responsible for powertrain engineering and product development for Navistar’s line of MaxxForce diesel engines and engines sold to Navistar customers. He is one of the world’s leading authorities on diesel engines and has a disciplined approach to design, validation, cost controls and product quality.
In his more than 25-year career, Helmut has acquired vast technical expertise in both diesel and gasoline engines. He had been with VW in Germany for a decade, leading a global team of 2,000 engineers. Among his accomplishments are the development of the high-performance V-10 TDI diesel engine in VW’s Touareg SUV and Phaeton luxury sedan, and the introduction of turbo-charged, direct-injection gasoline engines with low-fuel consumption as well as high power and torque.
Previously, Helmut was powertrain development director for Audi (part of Volkswagen Group) for four years. Prior to that, he served as director of gasoline engines for Volkswagen brands for three years. He also spent 13 years with FEV Engine Technology, a global engine development consultancy.
He holds a degree in engineering from RWTH Aachen in Germany, as well as a doctorate of engineering and is well known within the global engineering community.
