CNH confirms Tier 4 interim technologies: SCR above 100 HP, EGR below

CNH’s North American brands have confirmed that SCR and EGR technologies will be used for Tier 4 interim emissions standards, but not together. However, both technologies will be employed to reach the tougher Tier 4 final limits. Tier 4 interim emissions standards will become mandatory for engines above 174hp (130 kW) in 2011, and Tier 4 final standards begin in 2014.

Case IH and New Holland Agriculture will use SCR for engines above 100 HP and gave several reasons for this decision: longer service intervals, lower fuel consumption, wider fuel compatibility, and cooler running temperatures. For smaller engines, which are often used by consumers and the “rural lifestyle” segment, fuel efficiency is less critical and cooled EGR will be used.

Case, New Holland and Kobelco construction have said that the choice of emissions technology (SCR or EGR) will depend on machine application, operating costs, and packaging considerations.

As the major engine supplier for all these machines, Fiat Powertrain Technologies certainly has the on- and off-highway engine experience necessary to make both SCR and EGR work.
